Update

Some ups and downs managed to lose some money and make some dabbling in stocks. Stay tuned.

Just reached another milestone

Just past the $50,000 mark in my 401K savings.

Very pleased with 6% return this year. Next step is to convert 401K to Roth IRA by paying $8,000 now to get $45,000 extra later plus tax free withdrawals in the future.

10 Reasons You Suck at Stock Market Investing + FREE Financial Book Giveaway!

Gains & Losses Total:   -$339.10   -39.62 % = This  is the result of my adventures in investing thus far.  Originally and naively I believed that I would be able to amass a small fortune in a relatively short amount of time because I consider myself to be a reasonable smart person.  Don't get me wrong I have been successfully maintaining my retirement portfolio (401K and Roth IRA) through Fidelity and consistently beating the market for the past 3 years.  But I really suck at investing in individual stocks.  After boiling it down, here are the 10 reasons why:

Value Investing for Beginners

Investing in the stock market, especially for beginners, can seem like an impossible task. With thousands of companies to choose from, how do you know which one to pick and minimize any potential loss? Some of the world’s richest people, including Warren Buffett, believe one way to beat the stock market is to follow what is known as value investing.

Value investing has been around since the early 1920s when two professors began teaching it at Columbia Business School. The idea behind this type of investing is that investors look for stocks that are selling below the company’s true value. These are public stocks which also offer high dividend yields, have low price to earnings multiples or low price to book ratios. Value investing goes against buying the hottest stock at any particular moment and instead trusts that the price will reflect the company’s true nature over the coming years.

There are several basic steps to following value investing. One is to look for a great company. It can’t be just good or OK, it has to be great. This can be a company you work for, buy products from, is environmentally conscious, or one you just really like. If you are going to invest in a company you must really like it or you will not pay as much attention to your investment.

Another way to follow value investing strategies is by checking to see how long the company has been in business. Companies in business less than two years have little track record for you to examine when trying to determine whether or not to invest with them. On the other hand, companies that have been in business for at least ten to fifteen years make excellent candidates for value investing. Companies which have been in business this long have a proven record for investment.

When investing in a company, ask yourself if that company will still be around in ten, twenty or thirty years. The way to make money on the stock market is not in constantly buying and selling, but rather long term investing. If the company isn’t going to survive the next several years, then there is no point in investing in it. You wouldn’t invest several hundred dollars on a new computer if you knew it is going to die in a year so why would you invest in a company that may go under shortly.

The final piece to value investing is making sure that the company you are considering investing in offers something unique. Be sure to find out if they offer something that no one in the same field has. Do they have patents or copyrights? If they do, these can be worth a lot of money and keep others from copying what they do therefore flooding the market. If they have a competitive advantage in their respective field, the chances are better that the company will be stable and still be in business several years later.

Investing in the stock market is not as easy as throwing a dart at a board, but with a little research you will be able to find the undervalued stocks which could pay large dividends down the road.

Bend the rules of TIME with these tips.

Is it possible to speed up time while your at work? Try these tricks to tap into your flow and kick the clock into overdrive.

Do you want to make your job more satisfying?

Part 1 of a 5 Part Series on Job Satisfaction.

Do you dread going to work?  Are you getting burned out and jaded?  This series will teach you how to enjoy your job again.  If you were to get a promotion today and your salary doubled, you be pretty happy right?  You'd be excited until the novelty wore off, which happens quickly (joy is fleeting)....

So what exactly is it that makes us satisfied with our jobs?  According to the Havard Business Review job satisfaction can be boiled down to 3 specific things.

  • Challenging work. Believe it or not, monotony = boredom = unhappiness.  If you are never challenged at work you do not have a chance to learn or grow.  Overcoming challenges or difficult problems can be stressful but they give us a sense of achievement and accomplishment versus doing things that are easy and become mind-numbingly dull over time.

  • Being appreciated by coworkers and superiors.  Show me someone who works tirelessly day in and day out and is only recognized to be reprimanded for doing something wrong and I'll show you a miserable, disgruntled worker.  Everyone likes to be appreciated.  Humans, like other animals respond favorably to positive reinforcement.

  • Contributing to decisions.  This is similar to having autonomy.  Independence and the feeling of having control is important to being happy.  When we feel as though everything is forced upon us we feel helpless.  Even giving people a little choice in decisions make transitions much easier.
The BIG 3, be satisfied in any job.Check back for Part II of The Job Satisfaction Series.

Reallocated some of my 401K Funds

Still trying to reach the $50,000 milestone for my 401K, probably will reach it before the end of this year. The market has not helped my cause, to date my overall value has dropped 0.7%. I reallocated my funds in my 401K since the market is really flat this year. I have moved to some bonds federal and world and will follow closely to see how the account fairs. My other single stock picks have been dogs as well, losing over 50% in value. I am cutting some of my losses and selling to get out of the stocks before losing any more. Sharebuilder is good if you are investing a little bit consistently but the fees are too high to make a quick buck day trading or trading will small amounts of cash. The commissions eat up all of the profits -$10 per live trade it too high. I am currently looking for a different brokerage for trading with much lower fees so I can start making profits. Anyone use TradeKing or Sogo?

Four smart ways to get rid of debt

*Guest post by Veronica Brown:

Often, people get into debt but they don't have the sufficient income to get out of it. As a result they start having sleepless nights. However, there are many ways by which people can get rid of debt easily.

Four ways to get rid of debt:

* Debt Consolidation: The purpose of debt consolidation is to combine all of your unsecured debts into one monthly payment. Many financial institutions offer debt consolidation loans. In case you are stuck with several different loans, then the best way to get out of it is to go for a debt consolidation. You will get one loan that will pay back your outstanding balances. For this loan you have to make single monthly payment over a certain period of time. This loan has a low rate of interest. As you are paying over a long period of time so your monthly payments will be less.

* Debt settlement: The most popular way to get rid of debt is debt settlement. The debtors can reduce their balances from 40% to 50%. There are various debt settlement companies who offer this program. It is a process where the debtor starts saving money in a trust account(opened by the settlement company) instead of paying money to the creditors. However, this account does not usually earn any interest. It is only when the debtor has saved 50% of the outstanding balance in the trust account, the counselors start negotiating lump-sum settlements with the creditors.

* Debt management plan: This plan can also help the debtors to get rid of debt. This plan helps the debtors to pay back the unsecured debts. Usually, a third party organization access the debtor's income, expenses, credit balances. Then the counselors negotiate with the creditors to lower the interest rates and payments.

* Self-help: The debtors can also get rid of debt if they follow few guidelines. Debtors should cut down their expenses ( going for a movie, buying luxury items, designer clothes and etc). They should find ways to increase their income ( per-time jobs, forex trading). They must stop collecting new credit cards, store cards, etc. They must contact the creditors as soon as possible and negotiate with them to reduce the interest rates of the loans. They should make the minimum payments on each card on time.

These four ways can help you to get rid of debt within few years. Once you get rid of debt, you can lead a tension-free life

This is a guest post by Kevin Craig. If you are interested in writing for How to Make a Million Dollars, contact me and send me a sample.

I will retire with over 1 million dollars in my 401K

I am currently on track to save over 1 million dollars for retirement. In fact Fidelity estimates that I'll have exactly $1,258,518 in my 401K upon retirement. Unfortunately that date is 35 years away. It will take me 32 to break the million dollar mark. I would like to speed up the process a bit and shave off 12 years so that I have a cool million saved when I turn 50.

I know it all depends on the market but there are a few things working in my favor.

1. I save 15% of each paycheck and have it automatically deposited into my 401K

2. I usually get an annual raise of 2-3% and each year I contribute more

3. I will soon have a much higher paying job and be able to put at least 15% in

4. I am currently invested in 95% stocks 5% bonds and equities

5. I am in a targeted retirement fund which will change allocations to be more conservative closer to the time I retire

I do have a few things working against me as well:

1. My employer cut out the 4% matching

2. I want to convert my 401K into a Roth IRA so I don't have to pay taxes on money I take out later.

3. I have a growing family with more mouths to feed and more expenses

How will I accomplish my goal of saving 1 million by 50? Easy. Persistence, patience, automated savings, increase earnings, and smart investing. I am very interested in creating streams of passive income (meaning working hard to create something that produces income on a continual basis). Examples of current passive income streams: money from this blog (already made over $1,500, dividends from stock - currently reinvesting, and royalties from intellectual property such as books and songs).

Currently I have been working on a research project about survey sites. I have already made over $50 in the last month and am ranking the best sites. I will share with you where to go to make some money and which sites to steer clear of. I will release the rankings in a detailed post that I am working on. Subscribe to the feed below if you are interest in learning ways to make money and save money. My team is currently working on "How to Make a Million Dollars" BETA Make Money, Save Money - Retire in style tm. This reorganization will make the information more useful and easier to navigate. I found out I was overpaying my mortgage company

I recently got a letter in the mail from Wells Fargo letting me know I have too much money in my escrow account and they sent me a refund. I was really surprised and somewhat upset to find out that they were holding my money. It was nice to get the $2,6752.11 check. They were also able to adjust my monthly mortgage bill so that I'll be paying $100 less a month. Has this ever happened to anyone else? It seems very strange to me.

My student loan experience

Last summer I got accepted into a Master's program at UMDNJ. There was a lot of paperwork to fill out, but I completed the application. Much to my dismay I received a letter from UMDNJ shortly after being accepted stating that they received a payment from Sallie Mae for over $10,000. I was outraged. I never wanted any loans but they granted me student loans as part of the application process. There was an extensive online financial aid piece which was required but I never signed up for a loan. I called UMDNJ and they gave me the run around and then I called Sallie Mae and they told me to call the school. I was extremely angry, anytime you apply for a loan the company does a credit check and then the loan is registered in your credit history. I received a letter from Sallie Mae a few days later explaining the funds have been deposited. After much complaining and talking to supervisors was I able to cancel the student loan

The survey sites have finally started to pay me.

I have been paid $11 by one survey site through Paypal so far and I have another $14 waiting at other sites (I have not yet reached the payment threshold). After some simple calculation I have found that I make around 50 cents an hour working on surveys. This is not a very good use of my time since I make over $29 an hour at my job. As for blogging it is really little work and all reward since I enjoy writing as a hobby and don't see it as something I have to do. I have almost finished my expose on survey sites and it will be out next month. I was curious about adding another source of passive income and although it has not been very profitable it has been enlightening. I am have already surpassed my goal of double the blog's income this month and believe next month will be much harder unless I really start to put some honest work and time in. I realize that there is no comment button on the posts for now (I was getting a lot of spam) but I'll be making some changes for next month. If you have any suggestions or things your interested in click on the contact button and let me know. I plan to write a short series on how to get a new heating/cooling system for half the price with government rebates. We recently updated and upgraded at our house after going through an energy audit, sealing, installation, and testing our house is much more energy efficient.

Can you make any real money with survey sites?

What's the deal with PAID survey sites?
Recently I have been signing up for a lot of different survey sites to make some extra money.  After thoroughly testing numerous paid survey sites, countless hours of frustration I present to you an insiders look at the Wonderful World of Paid Survey Sites.

First I'd like to clarify a few things about doing online surveys.

  1. This will not make you get rich quick. You will not be able to bring in substantial sums of money unless you are getting a ton of other people to sign up (acting as an affiliate).   I found that some survey sites reward you for signing up for other survey sites while they collect an affiliate compensation - almost like scalping tickets.  I'll explain this in greater detail later during my roundup of the dirty dogs of the survey world.
  2. Many survey sites have a point system in place where each point equals a fraction of dollar.  For example on SurveySpot each point equals one cent.  I'll breakdown numbers and figures in the review.
  3. Many survey sites require you to request a minimum payout level.
  4. Many survey sites require you to sign up for "free trials" of products or services which later become paid subscriptions unless you cancel
  5. You will be giving out a lot of personal information and have a bunch of new spam flooding your inbox.
That being said, if you are still interested in making a few extra dollars I will review a few of the survey sites that I consider best of breed and warn
you which ones to steer clear of.  I do not consider filling out surveys
to be able to bring you enough income to quit your day job, but if you
are a poor college student, or high school kid, or even a guy that's
out of work, you could definitely make some extra money.  I do
not think that every survey is interesting and fun to do,
but some are and the actual energy spent
to fill out a survey is
minimal.

(Stay Tuned - Currently assembling an extensive review of all the survey sites I personally tried)

P.S.  The sites I recommend are located at the top right>>>>>>>>>>>>

4 Ways to Make Money Online Today

Take a look at some of the survey sites on the right. It is free to sign up and you can earn money for a small amount of time and effort.

I have something that people would KILL for.

Join the underdog movement, avoid scams for the big names getting fat off the little fish. I am going to make the big online money makers mad by telling you how they do it, without charging you. Usually you'd be paying them $20 to upwards of $500 for the information I will share with you in the weeks to come. Shoemoney is heavily marketing his new "system" by getting all his affiliate friends to recommend people to buy it. The target audience is beginners, people that don't know what they are doing, and they are liable to fall for the bait hook line and sinker. Please avoid this trap. It's retailing for $197 and it is a monthly subscription. The claim is he will guide you to your first $100 online. I will guide you to your first $100 online for free. Stay tuned. I have done it and you can too. Underdog out.
