Save money on speaker wire

Don't buy Monster Cable for $55, it works no better than regular 24 gage copper wire, the kind you would find in a lamp cord. The same length would cost about $1.80 at your local hardware store. There is no difference in sound quality. Don't fall for expensive speaker wires, it is a marketing ploy.

Interesting, never would have thought to use wire from an appliance or other device to use as speaker wire...

  2. Yes, I was surprised as well, but it's true.

Actually, THHN wire makes excellent speaker wire, as well. Buy two lengths (I often buy one red and one black length of wire), and clamp the ends of the two wires in a vice. Put the two remaining ends in a cordless drill, and twist until it's even throughout the length of your speaker cable. I use electrical tape every 1' to keep it from unraveling.

With this method, you'll not only save money, but you'll also improve the quality of sound, especially if you're using larger speakers or a subwoofer.
