Should I go back to school to get my doctorate?

This is the question I'm currently wrestling with.

  1. Doctorate in field? That makes a difference. But in general, don't do it if you think it will earn you more money. It'll just take you out of work for a few years where you could be gaining experience, making contact and working for promotions. If you just want it for the sake of having it, don't go into debt doing it.

  2. Doctorate in field. I'm currently working the health care industry as a Nurse. I would be going back to get an MD. I'm trying to figure out what to do. 5 more years of school doesn't sit well with my wife, but I feel that I can do more. I'm fine with where I'm at professionally, but I don't want to sell myself short. I will continue in some form of higher education but this is where I run into a dark forest without any bread crumbs or well beaten paths.

  3. I guess it depends on where your priorities are. That may seriously hinder your finances temporarily. Any kids now, or soon? If there are no kids in the picture, or none soon then go for it. Statistically speaking, doc's are among the highest paid professionals. There's also the option of starting your own business....
